Rayna Grothe MD is a clinical pediatric gastroenterologist who practices out of the MUSC Children's Health Specialty Clinic in Okatie, SC.
Dr. Grothe's areas of expertise include general pediatric gastroenterology, feeding and nutritional disorders, aerodigestive disease, eosinophilic esophagitis, inflammatory bowel disease, celiac disease and the GI care of children with special health care needs.
She is experienced in developing pediatric GI programs, initially in the US Air Force and then at Raymond Blank Children's Hospital in Des Moines, Iowa. Prior to coming to MUSC, she was on faculty at Mayo Clinic Pediatric GI, where she was division chair for 8 years. During her 19 total years at Mayo Clinic, she helped establish several pediatric GI subspecialty programs, including an eosinophilic esophagitis clinic, feeding clinic and nutrition program. In 2019 she was awarded Mayo Clinic Pediatric Clinician of the Year by her peers.
Dr. Grothe's practice philosophy is threefold: 1.) All children benefit from and deserve access to state-of-the-art pediatric gastroenterology care. 2.) Close collaboration with patients, families, and medical teams enhances pediatric GI care. 3.) The needs of the patient are always in focus and are the primary driver in providing excellent pediatric GI care.
As a current member of the North American Society of Pediatric Gastroenterology, Hepatology and Nutrition child advocacy team, she is participating on the national level to promote awareness of the unique issues a pediatric patient with gastrointestinal disease faces. She is excited and honored to join the community-based pediatric GI practice at MUSC and looks forward to serving the patients and community.
Dr. Grothe received her M.D. degree from the University of Missouri at Kansas City, completed her pediatric residency at Wilford Hall USAF Medical Center and her pediatric Gastroenterology fellowship at the University of Minnesota. She is board-certified by the American Board of Pediatrics in pediatric gastroenterology and pediatrics. She is also certified by the National Board of Physician Nutrition Specialists as a physician nutrition specialist and is a certified nutrition support clinician by the National Board of Nutrition Support Certification.
