Vasanthan Kuppuswamy, MD

Dr. Vasanth Kuppuswamy, originally from Charleston, SC, joined the Department of Medicine as a Clinical Assistant Professor of Medicine in August 2021. He completed his undergraduate studies at Vanderbilt University in Nashville, Tennessee, where he earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Biomedical Engineering. He matriculated to Vanderbilt University as an Ingram Scholar, a four-year full-tuition scholarship intended for students with an exemplary record of community service. Both during college and in the one year following graduation, Dr. Kuppuswamy volunteered with the non-profit organization ‘Pallavaram Children’s Medical Center, Inc.’, where he lead the ‘Healthy Children, Brighter Futures’ initiative, a program to train village health nurses in the care of newborns and infants, in rural South India. He spent 6 months on the ground in India, implementing this project and training nurses, allowing them to provide monthly visits to children younger than one year of age to monitor growth and development, advocate for exclusive breast-feeding, and provide anticipatory guidance to mothers. In 2013, he started medical school at the Medical University of South Carolina, in Charleston, SC. While there, he received numerous honors and awards, including induction into Alpha Omega Alpha, the Hiram B. Curry Humanitarian Award, the Excellence in Public Health Award given by the United States Public Health Service Physician Professional Advisory Committee to the Surgeon General, and the Outstanding Student in Internal Medicine Award. Following graduation, he went to Washington University in St. Louis School of Medicine for residency training in Internal Medicine and completed in 2020. During his time in residency, he discovered a passion for hospital medicine and caring for critically ill patients in an ICU setting. Dr. Kuppuswamy looks forward to continuing to care for patients at the Medical University of South Carolina in addition to the ability to mentor medical students and residents as they progress through their training.
