Kevin King Roggin, MD, FACS, FSSO

Division Chief, Surgical Oncology; Clinical Director, Surgical Oncology

Dr. Roggin is a distinguished surgical oncologist, scholar, and educator. He specializes in the surgical treatment of complex upper gastrointestinal tract and hepato-pancreato-biliary (HPB) cancers. He is an innovator and expert in robotic surgery. He has introduced robotic approaches to many complex surgical oncology procedures: robotic pancreaticoduodenectomy (Whipple procedure) and distal pancreatectomy, robotic radical cholecystectomy, robotic liver surgery, robotic duodenal and small bowel resection, and robotic gastric surgery. He helped develop a robust multidisciplinary program for the management of CDH1 gene mutations carriers and has performed over 25 minimally invasive risk-reducing total gastrectomy operations over the last four years.

As the Division Chief of Surgical Oncology at MUSC, Dr. Roggin will enhance the division's clinical programs, creating collaborative, multidisciplinary approaches to liver, pancreas, and biliary disease and expanding the HIPEC, endocrine, and breast programs. He will also serve as Clinical Director for Surgical Oncology at the Hollings Cancer Center, working closely with the Hollings ICCE leadership to grow these key clinical areas.

A nationally recognized leader in surgical oncology, Dr. Roggin has served two three-year terms on the Executive Council of the Society of Surgical Oncology (SSO) and as Chair of the SSO Training Committee. He has over 18 years of experience as a surgical educator at the University of Chicago Medicine, including 12 years as the General Surgery Program Director. In 2019, he was honored with the inaugural Program Director of the Year Award. He is a Master Educator in the Academy of Medical Educators at the Pritzker School of Medicine, a member of the Gold Humanism and Alpha Omega Alpha Honors Societies, was named as a Senior Faculty Scholar in the Bucksbaum Institute for Clinical Excellence, and won the UC Biological Sciences Division Distinguished Educator Award in 2015.
