Benjamin Chapman Kalivas, MD

Benjamin Kalivas, MD is an academic hospitalist in the Department of Medicine and is a part of the brain stimulation team, within the Department of Psychiatry, where he treats patients with treatment resistant mental illness utilizing tools such as electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) and transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS). Dr. Kalivas completed his residency and is board certified in both medicine and psychiatry.

In addition to his clinical work, Dr. Kalivas has served as the program director for the combined Internal Medicine and Psychiatry residency program since 2000. He is active in resident and student education in both departments. Dr. Kalivas also works with the Department of Quality as the Medical Director of Graduate Medical Education (GME) Quality and Safety, where he facilitates the implementation of quality improvement and a culture of safety to the 800 residents and fellows working at MUSC.

Dr. Kalivas actively does research on delirium, a dangerous neuropsychiatric syndrome associated with acute medical illness. He works at implementing best practice as well as studying how delirium impacts patients at MUSC.
